Senegal international Krépin Diatta is targeting a return to the Premier League after joining Championship side Watford on a free transfer following five-and-a-half years with French club Monaco.
The 26-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Hornets, with an option for a further year, and will wear the number 15 shirt at Vicarage Road.
Watford confirmed the signing in a statement, describing Diatta as a Senegal international as he begins a new chapter in England.
Diatta believes the move can help him contribute to Watford’s push towards the Premier League, a competition he hopes to experience again.
“I am very happy to join the team,” Diatta told Watford’s official website.
“After talking with the people here, the project was very clear in my head. Watford is a top club that was in the Premier League not too long ago, and I think this is the place they should be.”
Watford have endured a difficult start to the Championship season, sitting 20th after eight matches with eight points from two wins, two draws and four defeats.
Diatta arrives with significant experience from the top level of European football and will be expected to contribute as the club look to improve their position.
Move could revive Senegal career
The transfer also resolves the club situation that previously affected Diatta’s international prospects.
He was left out of Senegal’s squad for their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Mozambique and Ethiopia after becoming a free agent.
Senegal coach Patrick Vieira confirmed that Diatta’s lack of a club was the reason for his omission.
“The answer is quite simple and clear: Krépin Diatta isn’t here because he doesn’t have a club,” Vieira said.
With his future now settled, Diatta can focus on regaining regular first-team football and working his way back into Vieira’s plans.
The winger was part of Senegal’s 2026 World Cup squad and has earned 65 senior international caps, while also making 19 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.
European experience
Diatta began his senior career with Norwegian club Sarpsborg 08, making 22 appearances and scoring three goals before moving to Belgian side Club Brugge.
He spent several seasons in Belgium, making 95 appearances and scoring 18 goals before earning a move to Monaco.
The Senegal international spent five-and-a-half years with the French club, making 114 appearances and scoring six goals.
He also reached the Coupe de France final during his time at Monaco and gained extensive experience competing at the highest level of European football.
Diatta’s development began with Senegal’s youth teams, including the Under-20 side that finished runners-up at the 2017 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and qualified for that year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup.
His move to Watford now gives him a fresh opportunity in England, with the immediate focus on establishing himself at Vicarage Road and helping the Hornets improve their Championship campaign.
For Diatta, the longer-term ambition is clear: help Watford return to the Premier League while rebuilding his place in the Senegal national team.
