Carlos Queiroz has been dismissed by the Ghana Football Association less than a month after returning as head coach, following two defeats in the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The former Bafana Bafana coach was restored to the role on 2 September, having been appointed to lead Ghana’s technical team for their AFCON qualifying campaign.
Queiroz had initially taken charge before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. His agreement was limited to the finals, and he stepped down immediately after the tournament.
The 73-year-old was brought back to guide the Black Stars through the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, but Ghana lost both matches played under his leadership.
They were beaten 2-0 by Ivory Coast before suffering a 4-2 defeat against the Gambia. The results leave Ghana bottom of Group C without a point.
In a statement delivered through the Ghana Football Association’s media team, Queiroz said the decision to end his second spell had been accepted by both sides.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” he said.
“The necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” Queiroz added.
Despite Ghana’s difficult start to qualifying, Queiroz did lead the team to the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, their first appearance in that phase since 2010.
His overall record across his spells in charge was less impressive, although both tenures were brief. He managed Ghana in seven matches in all competitions, recording one victory, two draws and four defeats.
The two AFCON qualifying losses brought his latest period in the job to an abrupt end, with the Ghana Football Association now required to make another change to its technical leadership.
