Cote d’Ivoire will face Cameroon at Ebimpe on Saturday, 3 October, with former international Didier Zokora expecting the hosts to win 2-1 in a closely contested friendly.
The match comes after the Elephants made a strong start to their campaign in the qualifying competition for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Victories over Ghana and Somalia have strengthened the momentum around the side, who are continuing their progress under manager Herve Renard.
Although the meeting with Cameroon is not a competitive fixture, Zokora believes it remains an important test for Cote d’Ivoire. The former midfielder says the game will provide a useful measure of the team’s development against an experienced international side.
He also sees the fixture as an opportunity for Renard to assess different combinations within the squad. The manager can use the match to try new partnerships and give playing time to players who may not have featured regularly.
Zokora highlights emerging talent
Speaking to 225foot, Zokora also discussed the progress of Malick Yalcouye and Yann Gboho.
Both players scored on their first appearances for Cote d’Ivoire, and their emergence has added to the options available to the national team. Zokora believes their development should be managed carefully, with the young players supported as they continue to establish themselves internationally.
He stressed the importance of allowing them to progress without placing excessive pressure on them. Their early impact has raised expectations, but Zokora’s view is that they should be accompanied as they develop rather than being burdened by immediate demands.
The former international regards the friendly as another stage in that wider process. Alongside the opportunity to test new combinations, the match will give the coaching staff the chance to evaluate how the younger players fit into a squad containing more experienced figures.
Cote d’Ivoire favoured to win
Zokora anticipates a competitive encounter between two established African national teams. He nevertheless believes Cote d’Ivoire’s home advantage and current form could prove decisive at Ebimpe.
His prediction is a 2-1 victory for the Elephants against Cameroon.
The match has also attracted attention from betting operators. The quoted odds are 1.64 for a Cote d’Ivoire win, 3.44 for a draw and 4.80 for a Cameroon victory.
