Bologna defender Emil Holm is expected to miss four to six months after undergoing surgery on a serious hamstring injury sustained while playing for Sweden.
The right-back was injured during Sweden’s Nations League victory over Romania on Friday, September 25. The damage to the hamstring tendon in his right thigh required an operation and is set to rule the former Juventus loanee out for most of Bologna’s remaining fixtures in the 2026-27 season.
Bologna confirmed on Thursday that Holm had surgery in Finland. Professor Lasse Lempainen performed the procedure, with Bologna club doctor Dr Luca Bini present.
“Following the injury he suffered during the Sweden vs. Romania match on Friday September 25, Emil Holm underwent surgery on the hamstring tendon in his right thigh,” the club said in a statement on its website.
“The surgery was carried out in Finland by Professor Lasse Lempainen, in the presence of Bologna FC club doctor Dr. Luca Bini. The player will rest at home for a few days and then begin the rehabilitation process. The expected recovery time is 4-6 months.”
Holm will now spend several days recovering at home before starting his rehabilitation programme.
The 2026-27 campaign is the first in which Bologna will have to plan for an extended absence for the Swedish defender, who has suffered the injury during the early part of the season and is expected to miss the majority of the club’s remaining schedule.
Bologna have already begun looking for cover at right-back. Former Italy international Matteo Darmian has trained with the club in recent days as he attempts to secure a permanent contract.
