Argentina began their first international campaign since Lionel Messi’s retirement with a convincing 4-0 friendly victory over Bolivia early on Thursday.
Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Nicolas Paz doubled the lead 10 minutes later. Cristian Romero added a third in the 53rd minute, and Jose Manuel Lopez completed the victory with four minutes of normal time remaining.
The match was Argentina’s first since their defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final in July. Lionel Scaloni’s side controlled the contest in Cordoba, applying sustained pressure and giving Bolivia little opportunity to threaten.
Paz was the standout performer in the opening game of what is being viewed as a new era for Argentina. Given a starting place by Scaloni, the Como player justified his selection with an impressive display in the final third.
The 21-year-old scored a fine goal and also produced an assist from a set-piece. He was a constant attacking presence, helping Argentina move forward with purpose and showing why he could become an important figure following Messi’s decision to step away from international football.
Argentina were less dangerous and less consistent after Paz was substituted in the second half, underlining his influence on their attacking play.
Messi, who is 39, announced his international retirement last month. However, he is set to wear the Argentina shirt once more in a farewell match against Benin.
Before that fixture, Argentina will play two further friendlies. They are due to face Burkina Faso on 3 October before meeting Benin next Tuesday.
