The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said it intends to challenge a decision by FIFA to dismiss its complaint regarding player eligibility in a World Cup qualifying match against DR Congo.
The dispute stems from a play-off encounter between the two sides in November, in which DR Congo progressed after defeating Nigeria on penalties during the second round of African qualifying.
The result secured DR Congo’s place in the inter-confederation play-offs, ending Nigeria’s hopes of advancing at that stage.
Following the match, the NFF submitted a formal petition to FIFA, alleging irregularities in the documentation used by several DR Congo players.
The federation claimed there had been “perceived fraud” in the provision of passports, which it argues enabled “a number” of players to qualify for participation in the play-off.
However, FIFA rejected the complaint, prompting the Nigerian football authorities to announce plans to appeal the decision.
The case centres on the eligibility rules governing international football, particularly the documentation required for players to represent national teams. Such regulations are overseen by FIFA, which is responsible for ensuring compliance across all member associations.
