FC Metz defender Koffi Kouao has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season, bringing to a close a four-year spell marked by consistency, fan support and challenging moments on and off the pitch.
The Ivorian international announced his decision through a message on social media, revealing that he will depart as a free agent once his contract expires.
His exit comes at a difficult time for the club, which is currently battling to avoid relegation from Ligue 1.
Kouao, 27, has been a regular presence in the Metz squad since joining, making 113 appearances in all competitions.
Over that period, he has contributed three goals and eight assists, including 26 league appearances this season.
In his farewell message, the defender reflected on his time with the club, highlighting both the highs and the lows of his experience.
“Four seasons, ups and downs, joys, sadness… But I have always tried to give everything on the field for this club and to live up to expectations off it ,”
He also expressed appreciation for the support he received from the club’s supporters throughout his stay.
“Thank you all for the welcome and your encouragement from day one. Thank you, Metz,”
Kouao’s departure signals the end of a significant chapter for both player and club.
Known for his versatility, he has operated as both a left-back and a central defender, becoming a valued member of the team during his time in eastern France.
Despite his importance to the squad, the season has not been without challenges.
Metz find themselves under pressure near the bottom of the league table, with relegation a real possibility as the campaign draws to a close.
The defender will have limited opportunities to add to his appearance tally before leaving.
He is currently suspended for the upcoming match against Monaco, but could feature in the final fixtures against Lorient and Nice.
Kouao has already called on supporters to attend what he described as a “Last Dance at Saint-Symphorien” on 10 May, when Metz host Lorient.
The match is expected to serve as a farewell moment for the player in front of the home crowd.
Earlier in the season, his future at the club had already come into question.
Reports suggested he was close to joining Turkish side Kayserispor during the winter transfer window, although the move did not materialise and he remained with Metz until the end of the campaign.
His time at the club has also included moments of controversy, notably when he was unhappy about being left out of the starting line-up for a match against Rennes.
The incident briefly raised questions about his role within the team, though he later addressed the situation.
On the international stage, Kouao has represented Ivory Coast, earning two caps for his country.
As he prepares to move on, the defender is also looking ahead to life after football, with ambitions of becoming a pundit once his playing career comes to an end.
