The football authorities in Mali have begun the process of recruiting a new national team head coach, signalling a likely end to Tom Saintfiet’s tenure with the Eagles.
In a statement issued on 26 April, the Malian Football Federation called for applications from qualified candidates to take over leadership of the men’s national team. The announcement was formally confirmed on 28 April, with a submission deadline set for 10 May 2026.
The move comes despite Saintfiet still being under contract until August 2026, and suggests the federation is preparing for a transition following a period of mixed performances.
High expectations for successor
According to the federation, applicants must hold either a CAF Pro or UEFA Pro coaching licence and demonstrate significant experience, particularly in the latter stages of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The governing body is also demanding a clear and forward-looking vision. Candidates are required to outline an “ambitious sporting strategy,” prioritise merit-based player selection, and work towards delivering “unprecedented successes” for the national side.
Officials say the successful candidate will be tasked not only with improving results but also with establishing Mali as “one of the major forces in African football.” Regular qualification for major international tournaments is among the key objectives set out by the federation’s executive committee.
Saintfiet’s position under pressure
Although the federation’s announcement did not explicitly mention Saintfiet, the timing has fuelled speculation about his imminent departure. The Belgian coach took charge in 2023, but recent performances appear to have weakened his standing.
Mali’s inconsistent displays in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, coupled with an early exit in the round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, are understood to have contributed to doubts over his future.
Reports have also pointed to broader challenges within the team setup, including administrative difficulties and internal tensions, adding further complexity to the situation.
Fast-tracked recruitment process
The selection process is expected to move quickly. After the 10 May deadline, applications will undergo an initial review before shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews with a technical committee. Final approval will then rest with the federation’s executive leadership.
The decision to open applications marks one of the first major actions taken by the federation’s new president, Mahazou, widely known as Baba Cissé. He has pledged to bring renewed stability and direction to Mali’s national teams.
With the timeline compressed and expectations high, attention will now turn to who emerges as the preferred candidate to lead the Eagles into their next chapter.
