Zamalek pays homage to ‘Sheikh of broadcasters’ Fahmy Omar

Zamalek SC has announced that a key radio studio at its headquarters will be named after the late media figure Fahmy Omar, in recognition of his influential role in the club’s media development.

The decision was taken by the club’s board of directors, led by Hussein Labib, as part of efforts to honour Omar’s legacy in sports broadcasting.

A tribute to a distinguished career

The newly named studio is used for broadcasts of Radio Sawt Zamalek, a platform closely associated with Omar’s pioneering work.

According to the club, the move is intended as a tribute to a career widely regarded as one of distinction within the media industry. Fahmy Omar played a central role in the establishment of the station and was instrumental in its early development.

He was responsible for launching the station’s broadcasts and was also the first voice heard on air, delivering its opening speech from within the studio that now bears his name.

Innovation in club media

Radio Sawt Zamalek began broadcasting on August 18, marking what the club described as a significant step in modernising communication with supporters.

The initiative represented a relatively new approach for sports organisations in the Middle East, with Zamalek positioning itself among the early adopters of digital radio platforms within club football.

By launching its own station, the club sought to align with global trends in media and fan engagement, offering a dedicated channel for news, commentary and club-related content.

This move has since been seen as a milestone in how clubs in the region connect with their audiences beyond traditional matchday experiences.

Remembering ‘Sheikh of broadcasters’

Fahmy Omar, often referred to by colleagues as the “Sheikh of Broadcasters”, died on February 18 following what the club described as a long and distinguished career.

His contributions to broadcasting extended beyond Zamalek, but his involvement with the club’s radio station remained one of his most notable achievements.

The decision to name the studio after him ensures that his influence will continue to be felt by future generations of broadcasters and fans alike.

A lasting legacy at zamalek

By dedicating the studio to Fahmy Omar, Zamalek has sought to permanently enshrine the memory of a figure who helped shape its media identity.

The gesture reflects both respect for his professional achievements and recognition of his role in establishing Radio Sawt Zamalek as a pioneering initiative in the region.

As the station continues to broadcast from the White Castle, the legacy of Fahmy Omar is expected to remain an enduring part of the club’s story.
