Egypt to host Russia in key world cup warm-up clash

The Russian Football Union has confirmed that Russia national football team will face the Egypt national football team in an international friendly on 28 May in Cairo, as part of preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The fixture forms part of a broader schedule of three friendly matches announced by the Russian federation, with additional games planned against Burkina Faso national football team and Trinidad and Tobago national football team in early June.

According to the federation, the match against Egypt will take place at the New Administrative Capital Stadium, a recently opened venue with a capacity of approximately 94,000 spectators. The stadium, inaugurated in March 2024, is expected to host a large crowd for the encounter.

Part of wider international schedule

The Russian team’s schedule will begin in Cairo before continuing with a match against Burkina Faso on 5 June in Volgograd. The final fixture of the series is set for 9 June in Kaliningrad, where Russia will meet Trinidad and Tobago.

The sequence of matches is designed to provide competitive preparation ahead of future international commitments, with Egypt representing one of the more high-profile opponents in the lineup.

The Russian Football Union described Egypt as one of the strongest teams in Africa, highlighting the significance of the fixture as both teams prepare for major international competition.

Egypt preparing for World Cup challenge

Egypt are set to participate in the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The team is expected to compete in a group featuring Belgium national football team, Iran national football team and New Zealand national football team during the group stage of the tournament.

The upcoming friendly against Russia is seen as an opportunity for Egypt to refine their preparations against a European opponent, offering a different tactical challenge ahead of the global competition.

Recent form offers encouragement

Egypt enter the fixture following a productive international break, during which they recorded a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia national football team. They also held Spain national football team to a goalless draw in a separate friendly match.

These results provide a measure of confidence as the team continues to build momentum ahead of the World Cup.

Anticipation builds for Cairo encounter

The confirmation of the Egypt-Russia match adds to a growing list of international fixtures aimed at preparing teams for the demands of the 2026 tournament. With a large-capacity venue and two competitive sides, the match is expected to draw considerable attention.
