Cameroonian forward Danny Namaso’s future at AJ Auxerre is set to be decided not only by his individual performances, but also by the club’s battle to remain in Ligue 1.
The 25-year-old, who is on loan from Portuguese side FC Porto, is expected to stay in France beyond this season, but a key condition must still be met before his move can be made permanent.
Namaso has already satisfied the playing-time requirement written into his loan agreement.
The deal reportedly includes a clause that would make a permanent transfer compulsory if he featured in at least 60% of Auxerre’s Ligue 1 matches this season, a threshold the forward has now surpassed.
Despite this, the transfer is not yet guaranteed.
The activation of the €5 million purchase option is dependent on one crucial factor.
Auxerre must retain their place in the French top flight.
At present, the club sit 16th in Ligue 1 and remain involved in a tight relegation battle as the season nears its conclusion.
The agreement between Porto and Auxerre also includes additional performance-related bonuses, which could increase the overall value of the deal if certain conditions are met.
For now, however, the most significant factor remains the club’s league status.
If Auxerre manage to secure survival, the clause would be triggered automatically, making Namaso a permanent signing for a minimum fee of €5 million.
If they fail to stay up, his future would revert to FC Porto, with his long-term contract at the Portuguese club running until June 2028.
Namaso has been an important figure for Auxerre this season, making 27 Ligue 1 appearances.
In that time, he has scored three goals and provided three assists, contributing both in terms of attacking output and overall team play.
His performances have come during a challenging campaign for the club, who are fighting to avoid relegation in the final weeks of the season.
With only a small gap separating several teams in the lower half of the table, every remaining match carries significant weight.
Auxerre are preparing for a crucial fixture in their survival bid, as they host Angers in their 32nd league match of the season.
The outcome of such games is expected to play a decisive role in determining their final position.
For Namaso, the situation places both his short-term and long-term future in focus.
While his individual performances have been enough to meet contractual requirements, the final decision over his permanent stay in France now rests on the club’s ability to remain in Ligue 1.
