Kylian Mbappé was signed by Real Madrid in 2024 with the ambition of ushering in a new era of attacking dominance, drawing inevitable comparisons with club legend Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo’s legacy at the Santiago Bernabéu remains one of the most formidable in modern football history. The Portuguese forward scored 450 goals in 438 appearances before leaving the club in 2018, setting a benchmark that continues to define expectations for any successor.
While Mbappé is widely regarded as one of the game’s leading forwards, sharing attributes such as pace, consistency and a strong competitive mentality, closer analysis suggests that matching Ronaldo’s impact may be far more complex than initially anticipated.
Differences in Attacking Instinct and Efficiency
One of the clearest distinctions between the two players lies in their attacking intuition. Ronaldo has long been recognised for his ability to anticipate play, position himself effectively inside the penalty area and convert opportunities with remarkable efficiency. This instinctive understanding of movement and timing has been central to his sustained success.
By contrast, Mbappé, despite his technical strengths, is seen as still developing in these areas. Improving his positioning and decision-making in front of goal is viewed as essential if he is to approach Ronaldo’s level of consistency.
Former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti once highlighted Ronaldo’s influence by stating, “When you bring on Cristiano, you start the game 1-0 up.” The comment reflects not only Ronaldo’s goal-scoring ability but also the psychological advantage he offered his team.
Statistically, the gap remains significant. Ronaldo averaged approximately 1.1 goals per 90 minutes during his time at Real Madrid, while Mbappé’s current rate is reported to be below 0.8 goals per 90 minutes since joining the club.

Another key area of divergence is the variety of finishing techniques employed by both players. Ronaldo’s scoring record was built on a highly balanced approach, combining goals from both feet and aerial ability.
During his time in Madrid, Ronaldo scored 66% of his goals with his right foot, 17% with his left and 17% with his head, illustrating a versatility that made him unpredictable and difficult to defend against.
Mbappé’s distribution, however, reveals a more limited range. Of his 84 goals for Real Madrid, 74% have come with his right foot, 9% with his left and just 2% via headers. This reliance on a single dominant foot has been identified as an area requiring improvement.

Sustaining a rate close to one goal per game for six or seven seasons is seen as a minimum requirement to approach Ronaldo’s legacy at the club.

Comparisons between Mbappé and Ronaldo are perhaps inevitable given Real Madrid’s history of elite forwards. However, the evidence indicates that while Mbappé possesses exceptional talent, replicating Ronaldo’s all-round influence and statistical dominance remains a significant challenge.
