Former Morocco international Marouane Chamakh has drawn attention with a striking assessment of compatriot Adel Taarabt, claiming the midfielder possesses technical qualities comparable to Brazilian star Neymar Jr..
Chamakh, who previously played for clubs including Arsenal F.C., made the remarks in comments reported by French outlet Foot Mercato. His statements have reignited discussion about Taarabt’s career, widely regarded as one of considerable talent but limited fulfilment.
“Taarabt is technically gifted just like Neymar, as you know. This is obvious. I confirm it,” Chamakh said.
A Career Spanning Europe and Beyond
Now 36, Taarabt is playing for Sharjah FC in the United Arab Emirates, following a lengthy career across Europe. He featured for several clubs, including RC Lens, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, AC Milan, Genoa C.F.C. and S.L. Benfica.
Despite this extensive résumé, his career trajectory did not consistently match the early expectations placed upon him.
“He Is at the Same Level”
Chamakh doubled down on his comparison, insisting that his view was not exaggerated.
“Adel is just as technically gifted, not better than Neymar of course, but just as much. He is at the same level. I stand by that. You don’t know Adel, and that’s why. He had something special,” he said.
The remarks underline a long-held belief among some observers that Taarabt’s natural ability ranked among the elite, even if his overall achievements did not.
International Record Falls Short of Promise
While Taarabt’s skill has often been praised, his contribution to the Morocco national team—known as the Atlas Lions—was comparatively modest. According to figures from Transfermarkt, he earned 40 international caps, scoring four goals and providing four assists.
His involvement in major tournaments was limited. Taarabt featured only once in the Africa Cup of Nations, during the 2012 edition, and did not appear at the FIFA World Cup, despite Morocco qualifying for both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
His last appearance for the national side came in June 2022, in a friendly match against the United States. Since then, he has not been recalled.
Talent Without Tangible Rewards
Chamakh’s comments arrive as Taarabt approaches the latter stages of his playing career, prompting renewed reflection on what might have been. While his technical brilliance has rarely been questioned, it has not consistently translated into significant individual honours or collective success.
The comparison with Neymar—one of the most recognisable and decorated players of his generation—has therefore sparked debate over the relationship between talent and achievement in modern football.
Chamakh’s stance is clear: in terms of raw ability, Taarabt belongs in elite company, even if his career record tells a more complicated story.
