Shakhtar Donetsk will host their Champions League matches at Stamford Bridge this season after agreeing a deal with Chelsea to use the London stadium while they remain unable to return to their home in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian champions had been searching for a temporary venue for their European campaign and had been linked with Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium. They will instead play at Chelsea’s 40,044-capacity ground, several miles closer to central London.
Stamford Bridge is expected to host at least four Shakhtar matches. The club qualified automatically for the league phase of this season’s Champions League after winning the Ukrainian Premier League last season.
Chelsea said their decision was helped by the “disappointing 2025/26 season” they experienced. Their 10th-place finish in the Premier League means they will not compete in European football this season, making it possible for them to accommodate Shakhtar’s fixtures.
The move also gives Shakhtar a home venue in an area with a sizeable Ukrainian community. At the time of the 2021 UK census, an estimated 19,000 Ukrainians were living in London. About 45,000 more people have arrived in the capital since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, with a high proportion settling in west London, where Stamford Bridge is situated.
In a statement, Shakhtar said: “Playing our Champions League home matches at Stamford Bridge is a special opportunity for Shakhtar. We are grateful to Chelsea for the opportunity to host our games at this special venue.
“Stamford Bridge is one of the most famous stadiums in world football, with an incredible history and atmosphere. We are convinced that Shakhtar’s matches in London will provide unforgettable emotions for Ukrainian and English fans.”
Shakhtar have been unable to play at their Donbas Arena home since May 2014, when they were forced to leave the stadium because of the ongoing Russian invasion and occupation of the Donbas region.
The club have largely used the Lviv Arena for their Ukrainian home matches since then. The stadium is more than 700 miles from their traditional base.
Their European fixtures have also been staged at a number of venues elsewhere on the continent. Shakhtar have played home matches in Poland, Slovenia and Germany during their exile, and will now add Stamford Bridge to that list.
The agreement means Shakhtar will begin their Champions League campaign at one of the most recognisable grounds in European football, while continuing to operate away from their home city. Chelsea’s stadium will provide the club with a temporary London base for the league phase and at least three further matches beyond its opening fixture, depending on the competition schedule.
