Jose Mourinho has discussed why Real Madrid did not ultimately require Rodri, after the Spain international’s proposed move from Manchester City to the Spanish capital failed to materialise.
Real Madrid had previously shown interest in Rodri and attempted to negotiate a transfer for the player. However, no agreement was reached between the clubs, and Rodri eventually left Manchester City to join Barcelona.
The midfielder has signed a four-year contract with Barcelona, bringing an end to speculation over his next destination. Although Real Madrid had been involved in efforts to secure his transfer, the deal was not completed and the player will instead continue his career at one of the club’s main domestic rivals.
Mourinho, Real Madrid’s head coach, has now spoken about the unsuccessful pursuit and explained why the Madrid side did not need Rodri. His comments address the decision behind the club’s position after its earlier interest in the player.
The move marks a significant change in Rodri’s Spanish career. Having departed Manchester City, he will now represent Barcelona under a four-year agreement. The transfer also means that Real Madrid will not add him to their squad despite previously trying to reach terms for his arrival.
For Mourinho’s team, attention will now turn to the start of the new La Liga season. Real Madrid will play their first match of the campaign on 22 August, when they travel to face Espanyol.
That fixture will be the first competitive test of the season for Mourinho’s side and will take place away from home. While Rodri’s future has been settled with his move to Barcelona, Real Madrid’s opening match will provide the immediate focus for the club.
The failed transfer is therefore part of the background to a new campaign in which Real Madrid will begin without the player they had previously tried to sign. Rodri’s four-year commitment to Barcelona has resolved the uncertainty surrounding his next club, while Mourinho has offered his explanation of why the move was not necessary for Real Madrid.
The Spanish club’s first opportunity to demonstrate its plans for the season will come against Espanyol on 22 August.
