Ammouta emerges as shock contender for Saudi Arabia job ahead of 2026 World Cup

Moroccan coach Hussein Ammouta has surprisingly entered the conversation for the Saudi Arabia national football team job ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the apparent stability under current head coach Hervé Renard.

While Renard remains in charge and continues preparations with the Green Falcons, discussions within Saudi football circles suggest that long-term planning is already underway — and Ammouta’s name is quickly gaining traction.

Growing Backing for Ammouta

Former referees’ committee head Nabil Nakshbandi has openly thrown his support behind Ammouta, highlighting the Moroccan’s strong track record at both club and international level.

“There are several options currently on the table for the Saudi national team, but I am inclined towards appointing Hussein Ammouta,” Nakshbandi said.

He further pointed to Ammouta’s impressive work with the Jordan national football team, where the coach earned widespread praise for his tactical discipline and ability to maximize limited resources.

Media personality Emad Al-Salmi also echoed similar sentiments, publicly endorsing Ammouta and adding momentum to the growing calls for his appointment.

Moroccan Coaching Influence Rising

Ammouta’s emergence reflects a broader trend   the increasing influence of Moroccan coaches across African and Middle Eastern football. The success of figures like Walid Regragui has elevated the reputation of the Moroccan coaching school, known for its tactical organization, discipline, and adaptability on the big stage.

This growing credibility has made Moroccan tacticians attractive options for ambitious national teams, particularly in the Gulf region where structured football philosophies are now highly valued.

A Strategic Decision Ahead

Despite the speculation, Saudi Arabian Football Federation has not made any official move, and Renard remains firmly in charge for now. However, the internal discussions suggest that the federation is carefully evaluating its future direction ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

For Saudi Arabia, the decision will ultimately come down to whether continuity or a fresh tactical vision offers the best path forward.

For Ammouta, meanwhile, this growing interest only reinforces his rising stock  and positions him as one of the most sought-after African coaches on the international stage.
