Nigeria international Chrisantus Uche is expected to miss the entirety of the new season after suffering a serious right knee injury during Getafe’s pre-season friendly against Monaco.
The 23-year-old forward was injured during Getafe’s 1-0 defeat by the French side after being introduced in the second half.
He was later taken off on a stretcher following a challenge involving Monaco defender Christian Mawissa.
Uche’s injury is now understood to be considerably more serious than initially feared, with reports indicating that he will require surgery after suffering damage to several structures in his right knee.
The injury represents a major setback for the Nigerian, who had returned to Getafe following a loan spell at Premier League side Crystal Palace.
Initial examinations conducted by Getafe suggested Uche had suffered a contusion to his kneecap. The Spanish club said after the match:
“After the first tests and clinical examination carried out by the club’s medical services, Christantus Uche presents a contusion to the kneecap of his right leg, caused by the blow suffered during the match against AS Monaco.
However, subsequent reports from Spain have indicated that further examinations, including an MRI scan, revealed more extensive damage involving the ligaments and menisci.
The latest assessment is expected to keep Uche out for the whole of the upcoming campaign, dealing a significant blow to a player who had been hoping to establish himself further in Spanish football.
Uche spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, with the English club holding an option to make his move permanent. That option was not exercised, meaning the Nigerian returned to Getafe ahead of the new campaign.
His return to Spain was instead expected to provide an opportunity to rebuild his momentum, but the knee injury has now interrupted those plans before the competitive season has properly begun.
The incident against Monaco also resulted in Mawissa being sent off. The challenge initially raised concerns about the severity of Uche’s injury, particularly because of the force with which the contact occurred.
For Getafe, Uche’s absence leaves the club facing the loss of an attacking option for a prolonged period.
For Nigeria, meanwhile, the injury is another concern surrounding a player who remains part of the country’s pool of international forwards.
Uche has played as a forward for Getafe and the Nigeria national team.
His latest setback means his immediate focus will now shift from preparations for the new season to treatment and rehabilitation.
