FC Barcelona are weighing up a move for Azzedine Ounahi as they look to strengthen their midfield following the long-term injury suffered by Frenkie de Jong.
Ounahi has emerged as a player of interest to the Catalan club after an impressive individual campaign with Girona, despite the club’s relegation to the Spanish second division. Recent reports suggest the Morocco international is now being considered as a potential addition to the Barcelona squad.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are monitoring the midfielder’s situation closely as they assess their options in the centre of the pitch. The club are understood to regard Ounahi as a player who could provide creativity, technical quality and the ability to break through defensive lines with the ball at his feet.
His reputation was further enhanced by his performances for the Atlas Lions at the 2026 World Cup, increasing his appeal among clubs across the European market.
Ounahi’s release clause is set at 25m euros, but Girona’s relegation could significantly affect the asking price. The same report says a deal worth about 10m euros may now be possible, a figure Barcelona view as a particularly attractive opportunity.
However, the transfer remains at an early stage and several conditions would need to be met before Barcelona could make a firm move. The club must first complete a number of departures to create greater financial flexibility and room within its budget.
Girona are also not expected to give up one of their most influential players cheaply. Ounahi remains an important asset for the club, even after its drop into the second tier of Spanish football, and the Catalan side will have to weigh any offer carefully.
Barcelona are not alone in tracking the midfielder. Ajax Amsterdam are among the other European clubs monitoring Ounahi, whose market value is estimated at 18m euros by Transfermarkt.
The Morocco international has also attracted strong interest from the Gulf. Al Ittihad have made a financially significant offer for the player, as exclusively reported by Africafoot, but Ounahi has not yet accepted the proposal or been persuaded by the prospect of moving to the region.
That decision leaves Barcelona with an opportunity to pursue the deal, although the club’s financial position and the need to sell players mean any move is likely to depend on progress elsewhere in the transfer window.
For now, Ounahi’s future remains one of the issues attracting attention during the summer market. His reduced potential transfer fee following Girona’s relegation could make him an appealing target for Barcelona, but competition from other clubs and Girona’s reluctance to sell cheaply could still complicate the negotiations.
