Morocco stay 8th in FIFA Rankings amid AFCON dispute

Morocco remain 8th in the latest FIFA World Ranking, despite expectations that the controversial outcome of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final could have lifted them higher.

The Atlas Lions had been tipped for a rise to fifth place following the forfeited final against Senegal, but the latest update shows no movement in their global position.

Morocco, however, continue to lead the African rankings, staying ahead of Senegal in the continental standings.

The ranking update comes against the backdrop of an ongoing legal dispute between the two nations. Senegal have taken their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, challenging the decision by Confederation of African Football to award Morocco the AFCON title by forfeit.

CAF’s ruling followed an appeal from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which cited Articles 82 and 84 of its regulations. These provisions state that a team that refuses to continue a match or leaves the pitch without authorization is deemed to have lost and can be disqualified, with the match awarded 3-0 to the opponent.

The decision relates to the chaotic AFCON final on January 18, during which Senegal’s players left the pitch after a penalty was awarded to Morocco. The situation escalated further as fans reportedly entered the field, creating disorder inside the stadium.

Senegal have strongly rejected CAF’s verdict, describing it as unjust and unprecedented. The Senegalese Football Federation has argued that the ruling violates fundamental sporting principles and has called for an independent investigation into CAF’s governance.

The dispute has also taken on a broader dimension, with criticism extending beyond football authorities. Senegalese officials have accused CAF of damaging its own credibility, while insisting the decision unfairly stripped the team of its title.

CAF, for its part, has indicated that the matter now rests with CAS following Senegal’s formal appeal. The outcome of the case could have significant implications for African football governance and the handling of disciplinary matters at the highest level.

Amid the uncertainty, Morocco have continued their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Under head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, the team recently played out a 1-1 draw with Ecuador national football team before securing a 2-1 win over Paraguay national football team.

While the legal battle continues, the Atlas Lions remain focused on on-field matters, looking to build momentum ahead of the World Cup as they aim to build on their recent progress on the international stage.
