Nigeria defender Emmanuel Utaka has joined Rivers United from Nasarawa United on a free transfer, completing a move that keeps the 19-year-old centre-back in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
Utaka’s switch was registered on 2 August 2026, with Rivers United securing his services after his spell with Nasarawa United. The move represents the next step in the young defender’s domestic career and places him at a club competing in the same league as his former side.
The centre-back has already recorded significant NPFL experience despite his age. His career record in the competition stands at 45 appearances and 3,514 minutes, giving him a substantial body of senior football before his arrival at Rivers United.
Born on 15 June 2007, Utaka is a Nigerian defender whose main position is at the heart of the back four. His move adds another centre-back to Rivers United’s squad while providing the player with a new domestic opportunity after leaving Nasarawa United.
Utaka joins Rivers United without a transfer fee, and the move is the latest completed transaction recorded for the club at the start of the 2026-27 season. The agreement does not include a stated contract expiry date.
The transfer also links two NPFL clubs directly, with Utaka moving from Nasarawa United to Rivers United rather than leaving the Nigerian top flight. At 19, he arrives with senior league experience already established through his 45 appearances, although no goals or assists are recorded for his NPFL career.
Rivers United are now the defender’s current club, while Nasarawa United becomes his previous team following the completed switch. Utaka’s arrival was formally recorded on 2 August 2026 as a free transfer.
