Zambian football has been thrown into mourning after Kabwe Rangers Football Club were involved in a fatal road accident that claimed the life of their driver while leaving several members of the team injured.
The tragic incident occurred as the team travelled from Serenje to honour a Week 25 fixture in the FAZ Central Province Division Two Zone B League against Silverlands FC. Reports indicate the accident happened between Mkushi and Kapiri Mposhi, near the Mpula area.
The driver, Sam Lungu, sadly lost his life in the crash, casting a dark cloud over what was meant to be a routine journey for the club.
Several members of the team sustained injuries, including players Christopher Musakanya, Given Sichamba, and John Kombe, as well as head coach Lewis Nkandu and club secretary Karen Namukoko.
The news has sent shockwaves through the football community, with the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) leading tributes to the deceased and rallying support for the injured.
FAZ President Keith Mweemba expressed deep sorrow following the incident, extending heartfelt condolences to the family of the late driver while also wishing the injured a swift recovery.
“On behalf of my executive committee, I wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of Mr Sam Lungu. We also wish the injured a quick recovery,” Mweemba said.
He also commended FAZ Central Province Chairperson Chisanga Pule for quickly rushing to the accident scene and coordinating immediate support efforts in the aftermath of the crash.
What should have been a straightforward trip for a league fixture quickly turned into a nightmare.
The team was en route to honour their commitment in the regional league when the accident occurred, abruptly halting their journey and leaving players, officials, and the wider football family in shock.
Incidents like these serve as a painful reminder of the risks teams often face while travelling long distances for matches, particularly in lower divisions where resources and travel conditions can be challenging.
The loss of Sam Lungu has been deeply felt, not only within Kabwe Rangers but across Zambian football.
Drivers and support staff are often the unsung heroes behind teams, ensuring safe travel and playing a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of clubs. His passing has highlighted just how vital their contributions are.
As messages of support continue to pour in, attention will also be on the recovery of the injured players and officials, with hopes that they return to full health soon.
In moments like this, football goes beyond results and rivalries.
Clubs, officials, and fans across Zambia are expected to rally around Kabwe Rangers, offering support during what is undoubtedly one of the darkest moments in the club’s history.
For now, the focus remains on mourning the loss of a life, supporting those affected, and ensuring that the injured receive the care they need.
A journey meant for football has ended in tragedy and a community now stands united in grief.
