Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has identified Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen as a strong candidate to bolster the club’s attack, praising the forward’s attributes ahead of the summer transfer window.
Butt, who played during the early years of Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure at Old Trafford alongside players such as Roy Keane and Mark Hughes, believes the Galatasaray striker has the qualities required to succeed at Manchester United. His comments come as the club prepares to strengthen its squad, with a focus on adding firepower up front.
Speaking about the Nigerian international, Butt highlighted his physical and technical abilities, suggesting he could be a suitable addition to the Premier League side as they look ahead to a return to European competition.
“I think he’d be the one. You’d like to think that players from Turkish sides are gettable. The recruitment team will not only look at the best players, but you’re looking at the ones that are gettable,” Butt said.
His remarks reflect a broader consideration within recruitment strategies, where clubs must weigh both player quality and the feasibility of completing transfers. Butt suggested that pursuing highly expensive players may not always be practical.
“You’re wasting time on certain players that you’re not going to get if they cost £120m,” he added.
Osimhen, who currently plays for Turkish club Galatasaray, has earned recognition for his performances and was named the 2023 African Footballer of the Year. Butt emphasised the striker’s all-round capabilities, describing him as a forward who can contribute in multiple ways.
“I think he’s powerful, quick, he can run in behind, he’s strong, has got a good touch, can score different types of goals (and) he’s good in the air,” he said.
The former England international also drew comparisons with Odion Ighalo, another Nigerian striker who previously featured for Manchester United. Osimhen succeeded Ighalo as Nigeria’s number nine, stepping into the role of leading striker for the national team, a transition Butt believes demonstrates his readiness for a similar progression at club level.
Manchester United are expected to reassess their attacking options as the transfer window approaches, particularly with the prospect of competing again in the UEFA Champions League. Strengthening the forward line is likely to be a priority, and Butt’s endorsement adds to the discussion surrounding potential targets.
Osimhen’s experience at international level and his performances in European competitions could make him an appealing option. His familiarity with high-pressure situations, combined with his physical presence and goal-scoring ability, have contributed to growing interest in his future.
