Paraguay coach backs Morocco as future world cup contenders

Alfaro highlights rapid rise of Atlas Lions ahead of international friendly

Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro has described Morocco national football team as serious contenders for future World Cup titles, citing the country’s recent footballing progress as evidence of its growing global stature.

Speaking ahead of a friendly match between Morocco and Paraguay national football team, Alfaro pointed to the North African side’s development in recent years, suggesting they could challenge for honours at both the 2026 and 2030 tournaments.

The two teams are set to meet on Tuesday evening at the Bollaert Stadium, home of French club Lens, in what will be their final fixture during the current international break.

Strong endorsement of Morocco’s progress

Alfaro used his pre-match press conference to highlight what he described as Morocco’s consistent growth, both at domestic and international levels. He linked the country’s structural progress in football to the performances of the national team, which has gained increasing recognition on the global stage.

“Moroccan football is constantly expanding, and in this sense, it is in line with the performance of the national team. I see them as serious competitors in the 2026 and 2030 World Cups.”

The Argentine coach also referenced Morocco’s historic campaign at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which elevated the team’s profile and demonstrated its ability to compete with established footballing nations.

Reflecting on that achievement, Alfaro added: “The work that Morocco has done is a beautiful mirror to look at.”

A model beyond traditional powers

Alfaro suggested that Morocco’s rise reflects a broader shift in international football, where success is no longer limited to traditional powerhouses. He argued that well-organised federations with clear strategies can now compete at the highest level.

“It is not about Brazil or Argentina. On the contrary, there are many federations that may have, perhaps because of their organization, characteristics similar to ours, and in the end, why shouldn’t we take this path?”

His comments position Morocco as an example for other nations seeking to replicate similar success through planning and development.

Preparations continue for both sides

Turning to the upcoming friendly, Alfaro indicated that Paraguay could make adjustments to their starting line-up, depending on the physical condition of players following recent fixtures.

“We will try to make some changes to the starting lineup, but this will depend on the physical recovery of the players.”

Paraguay head into the match after securing a 1-0 victory over Greece national football team in a recent friendly, while Morocco played out a 1-1 draw against Ecuador national football team last Friday.

 Growing expectations for Morocco

Alfaro’s remarks underline the increasing expectations surrounding Morocco as they continue to establish themselves among the world’s emerging football forces. With consistent performances and a clear developmental trajectory, the Atlas Lions are now being viewed as genuine contenders on the global stage.

As preparations continue for upcoming international competitions, the friendly against Paraguay offers another opportunity for Morocco to reinforce that growing reputation.
