Lesotho edge Seychelles to progress in 2027 AFCON Qualifiers

Lesotho came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Seychelles in the second leg of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations preliminary-round qualifier in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

The result sees them advance to the final round of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers after overturning a first-leg stalemate.

Following a goalless draw in the opening leg at Toyota Stadium, the tie remained finely poised heading into the return fixture. Both sides had struggled to convert chances in the first meeting, leaving everything to play for in the decisive clash.

Seychelles made the brighter start in Bloemfontein and were rewarded with a first-half goal that put them ahead on aggregate. The Pirates showed greater attacking intent early on, capitalising on Lesotho’s slow start to take control of the tie.

However, Lesotho responded strongly after the break, producing a much-improved second-half performance. Their persistence paid off when Lebohang Lesako found the equaliser, bringing the hosts back into the contest and shifting the momentum in their favour.

With confidence growing, Lesotho continued to push forward and completed the turnaround through Sera Motebang, whose goal sealed a crucial win and effectively ended Seychelles’ hopes of progression.

The comeback highlighted Lesotho’s resilience and greater experience at this stage of qualification. Having reached the group stage in the previous campaign, Likuena appeared more composed under pressure, particularly in the decisive moments of the tie.

For Seychelles, the defeat marks a disappointing end to their return to AFCON qualifying after missing the previous edition. Despite a promising first-half display in the second leg, they were unable to maintain their advantage against a determined Lesotho side.

The victory ensures Lesotho move one step closer to securing a place at the continental tournament, with tougher challenges expected in the next phase of qualification.

For now, however, the focus will be on building momentum from this result, as Lesotho continue their bid to reach the Africa Cup of Nations.
