The Confederation of African Football has officially aligned the qualification structure for the 2026 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations with the global calendar set by FIFA, marking a significant step toward improving player availability and competition organization.
The decision ensures that all qualifying matches will be played within FIFA’s designated international windows for futsal between January and February 2026. This move is particularly important, as it obliges clubs to release players for national team duties a longstanding challenge in futsal competitions across the continent.
Under the newly confirmed schedule, the preliminary round of qualifiers will kick off in January 2026, with first-leg matches slated for January 23, followed by return fixtures on January 28. These early clashes will determine which teams advance to the decisive second round.
The final phase of qualification is set for early February, with matches scheduled between February 3–4 and February 7–8, 2026. This stage will ultimately decide the teams that secure their spots at the continental showpiece in Morocco.
Futsal AFCON Qualifiers
In total, 18 nations are expected to compete in the qualifiers, with ties played on a home-and-away basis. Seeding for the competition will be determined using the FIFA Futsal Men’s World Rankings, ensuring a balanced and competitive pathway to qualification.
This structured alignment represents more than just a scheduling adjustment it reflects CAF’s broader effort to professionalize futsal across Africa. By synchronizing with FIFA’s international calendar, the governing body is addressing one of the sport’s key logistical issues: the difficulty national teams face in assembling their best squads due to club commitments.
The final tournament will be hosted by Morocco, a nation that continues to play a central role in the development of African futsal and football infrastructure. The North African country also hosted previous editions, further cementing its reputation as a reliable host for continental competitions.
FIFA Calendar
Importantly, CAF’s futsal competition maintains a direct link with global tournaments. The 2024 edition of the Futsal AFCON served as a qualification route to the FIFA Futsal World Cup, highlighting the growing integration between continental and international competitions.
With this new framework in place, teams can now prepare with greater clarity and stability. Coaches will have access to their full squads, while fans can expect a higher level of competition as nations battle for a place on Africa’s biggest futsal stage.
As the countdown to Morocco 2026 begins, this alignment signals a more structured and competitive future for futsal on the continent — one that could elevate the game to new heights.
