NFF appoints electoral committees ahead of 2026 congress

The Nigeria Football Federation has approved the appointment of members to its Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee as part of preparations for its 2026 Elective Congress.

The decision was confirmed in a communiqué issued following the Federation’s Annual General Assembly held in Yenagoa. The appointments form a key step in the electoral process ahead of the vote later this year.

A total of 12 individuals have been selected across the two committees, with nominations drawn from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Each zone contributed two representatives to ensure balanced regional representation.

Those appointed include Matthew Burkala and Emmanuel Dada Obafemi from the North Central zone; Babagoni Grema and Benjamin Sak from the North East; Bature Musa and Abdulmalik Awwal from the North West; C. J. Aneke and Arinze Azubuike Anughere from the South East; Olugbenga Omole and Abayomi Akin Omoyimi from the South West; and Ayibaye Peter Great Temedie alongside Ayi Ekpo Ukpayam from the South South.

According to the federation, the newly appointed members will be formally inaugurated in Abuja on 25 March 2026. During that process, the committees are expected to organise themselves and elect their respective chairpersons.

The structure of the committees has been outlined in line with the NFF Electoral Code. The Electoral Committee will comprise five full members and two alternates, while the Electoral Appeals Committee will consist of three full members and two alternates.

The appointments are seen as a significant milestone in the lead-up to the federation’s next electoral cycle. The committees will play a central role in overseeing the process, ensuring compliance with regulations and handling any disputes that may arise.

The NFF has scheduled its Elective Congress for 26 September 2026 in Lafia, where key leadership positions within the federation will be contested.

The formation of the electoral bodies is intended to provide a structured and transparent framework for the elections, with officials tasked with managing both the conduct of the vote and any appeals.

With several months remaining before the congress, attention is now expected to turn to the next stages of the electoral process, including the formal organisation of candidates and the implementation of guidelines governing the vote.
