Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC say Sunday’s Toyota Cup clash with Kaizer Chiefs will serve as a crucial benchmark for their maiden CAF Champions League campaign in the 2026-27 season.
The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League winners, who are less than three years old as a club, face the Soweto giants in Rustenburg, South Africa, on Sunday in what they view as a high-level dress rehearsal for continental football.
“Playing Kaizer Chiefs will be a highly competitive match which is going to prepare us for the level at which we are going to be playing in Africa,” club spokesperson George Munengwa told Zimbabwe’s Chronicle newspaper.
“We are happy as a club which is three years old that we are going to be playing Kaizer Chiefs in Rustenburg…
“We have a lot of things to learn from more established football clubs…we take it as a great honour to be selected to play in the Toyota Cup ahead of more established clubs,” said Munengwa.
The match kicks off at 15:00 Southern African Time at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
Young champions target rapid rise in Africa
Scottland FC, based in Harare, secured the Zimbabwean league title to book their place in Africa’s elite club competition but acknowledge they must quickly adapt to the demands of the continental stage.
The qualifying rounds of the CAF Champions League are scheduled to begin in August, leaving the club with a narrow window to fine-tune their squad and playing style.
The showdown with Chiefs – one of Africa’s most followed clubs – is being treated inside Scottland FC as an early stress test of their readiness for the step up in quality.
Munengwa said the Toyota Cup appearance fits into the club’s broader strategy of accelerated growth.
Strategic links with South African clubs
The Scottland FC spokesperson also highlighted the importance of their emerging partnerships with several South African Betway Premiership teams, including Durban City FC, Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu FC.
Those relationships have already yielded player movement, with AmaZulu having loaned Zimbabwean defender Emmanuel Jalai to the Harare side.
As part of the collaboration with Chiefs, club director Bobby Motaung recently travelled to Zimbabwe to inspect Scottland’s infrastructure and operations.
“We had Bobby himself come down to assess how we are doing things. We took him to some of our facilities. He was so impressed to see us invest in infrastructure, for a club which is three years old,” Munengwa added.
Scottland FC believe that exposure to South Africa’s top-flight environment, both on and off the field, will help fast-track their development as they prepare to represent Zimbabwe in the Champions League.
Kaizer Chiefs use tie as league warm-up
On the other side, Kaizer Chiefs come into Sunday’s contest fresh from a pre-season training camp in Spain.
The Glamour Boys are using the Toyota Cup fixture as a key tune-up for their own domestic commitments, with the 2026-27 Betway Premiership season set to begin on 1 August.
Chiefs open their league campaign against newly promoted Kruger United FC at Mbombela Stadium, and the clash with Scottland FC – nicknamed Mabviravira – is being treated as a full-intensity rehearsal.
Both clubs therefore approach the match with high stakes: for Chiefs, it is preparation for a new league season under scrutiny; for Scottland FC, it is an early examination of whether Zimbabwe’s newest champions can compete with Africa’s traditional heavyweights.
