The head coach of the France national under-21 football team, Gérald Baticle, has downplayed the decision of Mamadou Diakhon to switch international allegiance to Senegal national football team, insisting such cases are a routine part of modern international football.
Diakhon had initially been named in the France Under-21 squad before opting to represent Senegal instead. Reports indicate that the player made the decision without informing the French coaching staff in advance.
Speaking to French outlet L’Équipe, Baticle said situations involving dual-nationality players were common and something national teams have learned to manage.
“We’ve had to deal with many dual-nationality cases,” he said. “This often happens at our training camps,” he stated, before highlighting the different communication methods used by the players: “One informed us, the other didn’t. But that’s their prerogative. We adapt to their choice.”
The coach emphasised that the decision falls entirely within the player’s rights and dismissed any suggestion of tension or conflict arising from the situation.
“He has the freedom to choose; that’s the rule. We have no feelings about it. When we don’t receive a message, we adapt. There’s no annoyance, no tension, no major problem,” Gérald Baticle clarified.
Diakhon’s switch reflects a broader trend in international football, where players eligible for multiple countries often make late decisions about their national team futures. These choices can significantly impact squad planning, particularly at youth level where players are still establishing their careers.
Despite the lack of prior communication in this case, Baticle maintained a pragmatic stance, underlining the importance of respecting players’ decisions while ensuring continuity within the squad.
The development also comes amid other selection considerations within the France Under-21 setup, including ongoing administrative processes affecting player eligibility.
For Senegal, Diakhon’s decision represents a potential boost as the national team continues to strengthen its pool of talent. For France, meanwhile, the focus remains on adapting to changes and maintaining stability within their development system.
