Nigeria technical team under review ahead of March friendlies

Two assistant coaches of the Nigeria national football team, Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu, arrived in Turkey on Monday as preparations continued for friendly matches against Iran and Jordan.

The fixtures form part of the Super Eagles’ build-up to upcoming competitions, but attention is also turning to the team’s technical bench.

While both assistants remain in their roles, questions are emerging within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) about the bench’s experience and capacity to lead if needed.

According to local media reports, the federation have began discussions about reinforcing the technical team with additional seasoned Nigerian coaches to support head coach Eric Chelle.

A meeting between the NFF’s technical committee and Chelle is expected in the coming weeks to review the structure and consider potential adjustments.

Assistant Coaches’ Backgrounds

Daniel Ogunmodede recently earned a UEFA B license in Scotland and made history by guiding Remo Stars FC to their first Nigeria Premier Football League title in the 2024/25 season. However, a dip in the club’s form this term led to the appointment of Usman Abdallah as head coach.

Fidelis Ilechukwu continues to impress domestically, with Enugu Rangers firmly in contention for the league title. Both assistants have shown promise, but the federation appears keen to ensure the technical bench is robust ahead of critical international fixtures.
