Nuamah proud despite Ghana’s World Cup exit

Ghana winger Ernest Nuamah says he is leaving the 2026 FIFA World Cup with pride after representing the Black Stars on football’s biggest stage, despite the team’s elimination from the tournament.

The Olympique Lyonnais forward reflected positively on Ghana’s campaign, saying the experience had provided important lessons that would remain with him throughout his career.

Nuamah was included in Carlos Queiroz’s World Cup squad despite spending a large part of the season recovering from injury. His selection was seen as a surprise, but the 22-year-old went on to make an impact during Ghana’s tournament campaign.

The winger started Ghana’s opening group match against Panama and later featured from the bench in matches against Croatia and Colombia.

One of his most memorable contributions came during Ghana’s final Group L fixture against Croatia in Philadelphia, where he created Derrick Luckassen’s goal in a 2-1 defeat for the Black Stars.

Although Ghana were unable to progress further in the competition, Nuamah believes the team showed commitment and represented the country with determination.

In a message shared on Instagram after the tournament, the Lyon player expressed his pride at having competed at the highest level of international football.

“Walking away from the biggest stage in the world with my head held high,” he wrote. “We fought with everything we had and gave our all to make our nation proud. Although we fell short, this journey has taught us invaluable lessons that will stay with us forever.”

Nuamah also praised Ghana’s supporters, thanking fans for their continued encouragement throughout the World Cup.

The winger’s message highlighted the emotional significance of playing for the national team and the importance of the experience gained during the tournament.

For Nuamah, the World Cup represented a major opportunity after a difficult period dealing with injury. Despite limited preparation before the competition, he was able to contribute to Ghana’s efforts and gain valuable international experience.

Following Ghana’s exit, the 22-year-old has taken a short break before returning to club duties in France.

Nuamah is expected back at Olympique Lyonnais in the coming days as he begins preparations for the new season.

The Black Stars will also begin planning for their next challenge, with the team scheduled to regroup in October for the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

While Ghana’s World Cup journey ended earlier than hoped, Nuamah believes the lessons from the tournament can help both him and the national team moving forward.

His performances in North America have added another chapter to his international career, as he continues to develop as one of Ghana’s promising young talents.

The winger’s focus will now turn to his club preparations, while Ghana begins the process of rebuilding and preparing for future competitions.

Despite the disappointment of elimination, Nuamah’s message reflected confidence, gratitude and determination to use the World Cup experience as a foundation for future success.
