Algeria consider Petković future after World Cup exit

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković is facing an uncertain future after the Desert Foxes‘ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) reportedly considering bringing his tenure to an end.

The Bosnian coach has come under scrutiny following Algeria’s 2-0 defeat by Switzerland in the Round of 32, a result that ended the North Africans’ hopes of progressing further in the tournament.

According to reports, FAF president Walid Sadi is assessing whether Petković should remain in charge, with discussions taking place over the direction of the national team after their World Cup campaign.

The federation is understood to be weighing up the possibility of reaching an amicable agreement to end the coach’s spell at the helm, despite having recently extended his contract.

Petković is expected to submit a detailed report on Algeria’s performances once the squad returns to Algiers.

The report will review the team’s displays throughout the tournament and is set to form the basis of talks between the coach and the federation’s leadership.

Following those discussions, the FAF’s Federal Bureau is due to meet to examine the findings before making a final decision on the future of the former Lazio manager.

The review comes only weeks after the federation announced a two-year contract extension for Petković on the eve of the World Cup, a move that reflected its commitment to continuing the project under his leadership.

However, Algeria’s exit at the first knockout hurdle has prompted a reassessment of those plans, with senior federation officials now considering whether a change in leadership is required.

Should the FAF opt to terminate the agreement, reports suggest the contract includes a clause entitling Petković to compensation equivalent to two months’ salary for the early termination of his deal.

No official decision has yet been announced, and the coach’s future is expected to become clearer in the coming days as the federation completes its evaluation of Algeria’s World Cup campaign.

The outcome of the review will determine whether Petković remains in charge for the next phase of Algeria’s development or whether the Desert Foxes begin the search for a new head coach following their Round of 32 exit.

With important international competitions and qualification campaigns on the horizon, the federation’s decision is likely to shape the direction of the national team over the coming years.
