Senegal-eligible defender Malang Sarr leaves Lens as free agent

French-Senegalese defender Malang Sarr has left RC Lens after the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to a two-year spell with the Ligue 1 club and leaving him available on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old is now a free agent and able to negotiate with any club after his deal was not renewed beyond the end of the current contract.

Lens confirmed his departure in an official statement shared on social media, acknowledging his contribution during his time at the club.

In their message, the northern French side described Sarr as a “key figure” during what they called a historic season, while also expressing gratitude for his service and wishing him success in the next stage of his career.

Sarr’s exit comes despite reports suggesting that extending his contract had been a priority for the club’s management. However, according to several media outlets, including Iwsport, the player did not respond to multiple offers presented to him by Lens, effectively bringing negotiations to an end.

The breakdown in talks means the defender now closes his chapter in northern France after two seasons, during which he was part of a squad competing in Ligue 1 and domestic competitions.

Sarr’s career has already seen him represent several clubs across Europe.

He came through the youth system at OGC Nice, where he made his senior debut in 2016, scoring in his first professional appearance and going on to register more than 100 matches for the club.

Following his breakthrough in France, he went on to play for a number of sides including Chelsea in England, Porto in Portugal, and Monaco before eventually joining Lens.

His experience across multiple leagues has contributed to his reputation as a versatile and experienced centre-back.

Internationally, Sarr’s situation remains of interest to Senegalese football observers. Although born in France, he is eligible to represent Senegal and has previously expressed a desire to play for the West African nation at senior level. His availability as a free agent could now potentially open further opportunities regarding his international future.

As he becomes available on the transfer market, Sarr is expected to attract interest from clubs looking to strengthen their defensive options without a transfer fee.

His experience in top European leagues is likely to make him an appealing option during the current window.

For Lens, his departure marks the end of a significant period in their recent squad development, while for Sarr it opens a new chapter in a career that has already spanned some of Europe’s major footballing environments.
