Azzedine Ounahi puts transfer talks on hold to focus on Morocco’s World Cup campaign

Morocco midfielder Azzedine Ounahi has rejected approaches from Villarreal and Real Sociedad, choosing to postpone any decision on his club future until after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Atlas Lions star remains fully focused on Morocco’s knockout-stage campaign and is not expected to enter into transfer negotiations until his international commitments have ended.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Ounahi has attracted strong interest from several La Liga clubs, with Celta Vigo and Real Betis also keeping a close watch on his situation.

Despite Girona’s relegation to Spain’s second division, the Moroccan international continues to enjoy an excellent reputation in Spanish football.

The report states that Ounahi is still regarded as one of Girona’s standout performers after an otherwise disappointing campaign that ended with the club’s drop from La Liga.

Although Villarreal and Real Sociedad were among the first clubs to make concrete enquiries, Ounahi has decided against committing to any move for now, preferring to evaluate his options once the World Cup is over.

His club situation remains a significant factor in any potential transfer.

While Girona have retained the midfielder’s €25 million release clause despite their relegation, Mundo Deportivo reports that the Catalan club could be prepared to negotiate a deal worth less than €20 million during the summer transfer window.

That flexibility could encourage interested clubs to intensify their pursuit once the tournament concludes.

For the time being, however, Ounahi’s priority remains Morocco’s World Cup journey.

The 25-year-old is determined to focus exclusively on helping the Atlas Lions progress, with any discussions regarding his future expected to resume only after the competition has ended.

His performances on the world stage could also influence the level of interest he receives, as several clubs continue to monitor one of Morocco’s most influential midfielders ahead of what promises to be a busy summer.
