Zamalek TV Presenter Suspended and Channel Fined by Egypt’s Media Regulator

Egypt’s media regulator has suspended a television presenter from appearing on air for one month and imposed a financial penalty on the broadcaster she works for, after concluding that a programme breached professional media standards.

The decision was announced by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, which said the disciplinary measures followed an investigation into content aired on the sports channel Zamalek TV.

Regulator Announces Suspension

The Supreme Council for Media Regulation, headed by Khaled Abdel Aziz, issued an official decision banning presenter Farah Ali from appearing on television screens for a full month.

According to the council, the suspension was imposed because the presenter violated approved media codes and standards governing broadcasting in Egypt.

The decision forms part of the council’s role in supervising media performance and ensuring that broadcasters comply with the professional and ethical regulations set out for television channels.

Financial Penalty for Zamalek TV

In addition to the presenter’s suspension, the council also imposed a financial penalty on the channel itself.

Zamalek TV has been ordered to pay a fine of 100,000 Egyptian pounds after the council concluded that the broadcaster had breached the professional standards regulating media work.

Officials said the penalty was linked to the content of a specific episode of the programme “Zamalek News”, which is presented by Farah Ali on the channel.

Investigation by Complaints Committee

The sanctions were issued following an investigation conducted by the Complaints Committee of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation.

During the inquiry, the committee reviewed the content of the episode that had prompted complaints. It also listened to the legal representative of the channel before reaching its decision.

After examining the material, the council determined that the programme had violated the codes and standards issued by the regulator to oversee media performance and control content broadcast on satellite channels.

The council said this breach made it necessary to take disciplinary measures against both the presenter and the channel.

Legal Authority Behind the Decision

The action taken by the council falls under the powers granted to it by Egypt’s Press and Media Regulation Law No. 180 of 2018.

The legislation gives the Supreme Council for Media Regulation the authority to monitor media institutions and hold them accountable if they violate professional rules or ethical standards.

Through this legal framework, the council is responsible for overseeing the conduct of broadcasters and ensuring compliance with regulations governing the country’s media sector.

Emphasis on Professional Standards

The council has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining professional discipline in media content.

It has called on all media organisations to follow the rules and regulations that guide broadcasting, saying these standards are essential for protecting media ethics and ensuring responsible communication with the public.

Officials say adherence to these guidelines helps maintain the credibility of the media industry while ensuring audiences receive content that respects professional norms.

The latest disciplinary measures, the council said, reflect its continued commitment to enforcing those standards across Egypt’s broadcasting sector.
