Al-Hilal’s semi-final hopes strengthened by form, attack and support

Sudanese side look to end 11-year wait as confidence builds before Berkane clash

Al-Hilal Omdurman are preparing for a decisive encounter against RS Berkane in the second leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, with optimism growing among supporters ahead of Sunday’s match in Kigali.

The fixture, scheduled to take place at Amahoro Stadium in the Rwandan capital, represents a significant opportunity for the Sudanese champions to reach the semi-finals of Africa’s premier club competition for the first time in 11 years.

Strong campaign fuels belief

Much of the confidence surrounding Al-Hilal stems from their performances throughout the current tournament. The team has produced a consistent run of results, particularly on home ground, where they have avoided both defeat and draws.

Even away from home, their record has remained solid, with only a single defeat that has not significantly affected their overall campaign. This level of consistency has provided a strong platform as they approach one of their most important matches in recent years.

Led by captain Mohamed Abdel Rahman, widely known among fans as “Gharbal”, the squad has demonstrated resilience and determination. Their steady progress has reinforced belief that qualification for the semi-finals is within reach.

Attacking strength offers clear advantage

Another factor underpinning Al-Hilal’s ambitions is their attacking efficiency. Under the guidance of head coach Laurentiu Reghecampf, the team has developed a potent forward line capable of troubling opponents consistently.

Al-Hilal have scored in nearly every match during the competition, failing to find the net only once in the early qualifying rounds. Their attacking trio of Jean Claude, Adama Coulibaly and Mohamed Abdel Rahman has been central to this success, delivering regular goals and sustained pressure on opposing defences.

Additional attacking options, including Sunday Odtonje and Emmanuel Flumo, have further strengthened the squad, giving the coach multiple tactical choices.

Fan backing expected to play key role

Support from the stands is also expected to be a decisive factor. Al-Hilal are set to benefit from strong backing in Kigali, with efforts made to mobilise Sudanese supporters as well as local fans.

The Rwandan Football Federation has encouraged attendance, with its president calling on fans to support the team, which is currently competing within the country. In addition, arrangements have been made to allow free entry to the stadium, a move likely to boost turnout and create a vibrant atmosphere.

Previous matches have shown the impact of such support, with players responding positively to the encouragement from the stands. Similar conditions are anticipated for the upcoming fixture.

Warning against complacency

Despite the prevailing optimism, there remains a note of caution among supporters. Some fans have expressed concern that confidence could turn into complacency, particularly given the team’s strong position and recent performances.

Coach Reghecampf has reportedly addressed this issue directly, urging his players to maintain focus, approach the match with seriousness, and respect their opponents.

Opportunity within reach

As Al-Hilal prepare for their quarter-final showdown, a combination of consistent results, attacking strength and significant fan support has strengthened their chances of progression.

However, the outcome will depend on their ability to maintain discipline and avoid overconfidence. If they succeed, the Sudanese side could secure a long-awaited return to the semi-finals and continue their impressive run in the competition.
