French football legend Thierry Henry has sparked debate over the Man of the Match award following Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup Group C fixture, suggesting that Ayyoub Bouaddi should have been recognised ahead of Vinicius Junior.
Vinicius Junior was officially named Man of the Match after scoring Brazil’s equaliser in the 32nd minute, cancelling out Ismael Saibari’s earlier goal for Morocco.
However, Henry believes the overall impact of Morocco’s 18-year-old midfielder Bouaddi was more deserving of the accolade.
The former Arsenal striker reportedly argued that awards should reflect influence across the full match rather than a single moment of brilliance.
While acknowledging the quality of Vinicius’ goal, Henry said Bouaddi had a greater all-round impact on the game.
Bouaddi, playing in his first competitive international match for Morocco, delivered a composed and mature performance against one of football’s most experienced midfields.
He played a key role in helping the Atlas Lions control large periods of the contest against the five-time world champions.
Henry highlighted the midfielder’s ability to remain calm under pressure, recover possession, and help his side progress the ball out of difficult situations.
He also praised Bouaddi’s maturity in dealing with Brazil’s experienced players in a high-intensity World Cup setting.
The French World Cup winner added that performing at such a level at just 18 years old, particularly against a team of Brazil’s calibre, was a significant achievement in itself.
Impressive debut on the global stage
Bouaddi was among Morocco’s standout performers at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where the North Africans started brightly and took an early lead.
The Lille midfielder was heavily involved throughout, registering more touches than any of his Morocco teammates and completing over 90% of his passes.
He also contributed strongly in duels and ball recoveries, while consistently helping Morocco transition from defence into attack.
Morocco’s strong start was rewarded when Ismael Saibari finished a well-worked move in the 21st minute, following a pass from Brahim Diaz.
However, Brazil responded through Vinicius Junior, whose equaliser ensured the match ended level.
Despite Brazil’s response, the African side remained competitive throughout and continued to trouble the South American giants, with Bouaddi’s midfield control central to their performance.
The result adds to growing attention around Morocco’s emerging talent pool at this World Cup, with Bouaddi’s performance particularly drawing praise on and off the pitch.
His display is expected to further increase interest from top European clubs as the tournament progresses, with his reputation continuing to grow after a composed showing on one of football’s biggest stages.
