The Democratic Republic of Congo’s World Cup preparations have been thrown into uncertainty after Spanish authorities cancelled their scheduled friendly against Chile over health concerns linked to the country’s ongoing Ebola outbreak.
The match, originally scheduled for June 9 in southern Spain, was blocked by local authorities after health officials advised against staging the fixture as a precautionary measure.
Mayor of La Línea de la Concepción, Juan Franco, confirmed the decision.
“I have signed the decree banning the holding of the June 9 match between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chile.”
DR Congo Offer Closed-Door Alternative
Despite the setback, DR Congo are determined to keep the fixture alive.
Head coach Sébastien Desabre revealed that discussions are ongoing over alternative solutions, including relocating the match or playing it behind closed doors.
“There are other stadiums, there’s the option of playing behind closed doors, there are several possibilities. We’re used to adapting.”
The French coach insisted the Leopards remain fully focused on their preparations for a historic return to the World Cup, their first appearance since 1974.
Ebola Outbreak Creates Additional Challenges
The Ebola outbreak declared in eastern DR Congo in mid-May has already forced changes to the team’s plans.
A planned domestic training camp was cancelled, with the squad instead relocating to Belgium to continue preparations.
Desabre, however, stressed that FIFA medical protocols are being followed closely and that preparations remain largely unaffected.
“Honestly, we’re having a perfectly normal training camp.”
World Cup Travel Concerns
The outbreak has also reportedly created complications regarding entry into the United States.
Reports indicate DR Congo’s squad may be required to complete a 21-day isolation period before travelling to North America for the tournament.
The Congolese side will be based in Houston and have been drawn into a difficult Group K alongside:
- Portugal national football team
- Colombia national football team
- Uzbekistan national football team
World Cup Schedule
DR Congo’s group-stage fixtures:

With the World Cup just days away, the Leopards now face an unexpected battle off the pitch as they scramble to secure a final warm-up match while navigating health restrictions and travel concerns.
