Mexico City will take centre stage in FIFA’s global build-up to the 2026 World Cup this week, as the Countdown Concert series links fans across Mexico, Canada and the United States through music and football.
But beyond the entertainment spectacle, the tournament is already generating strong interest across Africa, with South Africa among the teams preparing for a high-profile Group A campaign that will include hosts Mexico, South Korea and Czechia.
The synchronised concert initiative, which also features events in Toronto and Los Angeles, is designed to unite supporters across all three host nations ahead of the tournament kick-off.
In Mexico City, the main México Vibra event will be staged at the Auditorio Nacional on Wednesday, 10 June.
Fans are encouraged to arrive from 17:00 local time to take part in the opening Countdown Concert segment, which will feature live performances, broadcast links between host cities, and surprise appearances.
The Mexico City show will include performances from Los Ángeles Azules, alongside Belinda and Elena Rose, with additional guests expected as part of the wider programme celebrating Mexican music and culture.
FIFA officials say the initiative reflects both football passion and cultural identity across the host nations.
“Mexico City is one of the most passionate football cities in the world, where music and football are deeply ingrained in the culture,” said Jurgen Mainka, Chief Tournament Officer, Mexico, FIFA World Cup 2026.
“This Countdown Concert will bring that spirit to life, uniting fans and artists in a celebration that reflects Mexico’s hospitality, cultural richness and the excitement building across the country. It will also bring together Canada, Mexico and the United States in a shared celebration ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.”
For African supporters, attention is also turning to the competitive side of the tournament, where South Africa’s return to the World Cup stage adds another storyline from the continent.
Bafana Bafana will compete in Group A, where they face hosts Mexico, South Korea and Czechia between June 11 and 24, 2026.
The Mexico City Host Committee has branded its celebration México Vibra, a cultural showcase built around music and national identity.
The event will highlight Mexico’s musical history by blending established stars with special guest appearances from across generations.
The Countdown Concert series will run simultaneously across the three host nations.
In Toronto, the line-up includes Bryan Adams, Nora Fatehi with Sanjoy, Vegedream, and a collaboration between AHI and Wyclef Jean, while additional United States performers are expected to be announced shortly.
