Spain appear ready to place their faith in a new generation of football stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal expected to headline a squad blending youthful flair with established international experience.
Spain’s projected 26-man squad reflects a long-term shift towards younger players who have already become central figures for both club and country.
European champions Spain are expected to arrive at the tournament carrying significant expectations after their success at Euro 2024, and much of the attention is already focused on Barcelona winger Yamal, who has rapidly become one of the biggest names in world football despite still being only 18 years old.
The emergence of Yamal also continues a wider trend shaping modern international football, where players with African roots are increasingly influencing elite European national teams.
Yamal, whose rise has captured global attention, represents part of a multicultural generation reshaping Spanish football.
Alongside him, Spain’s midfield remains built around technical control and possession football, with Pedri, Gavi and Rodri expected to form the core of the side.
Manchester City midfielder Rodri is seen as the experienced anchor of the team, while Pedri and Gavi continue to embody the passing identity traditionally associated with Spanish football.
Arsenal duo Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi are also included in the projected squad.
In defence, Spain appear to be preparing for another generational transition.
Young centre-back Pau Cubarsi is expected to become a key figure, while experienced defender Aymeric Laporte provides stability and leadership.
The projected squad also includes Marc Cucurella, Pedro Porro and Alejandro Grimaldo as Spain continue to build depth across defensive positions.
In goal, Unai Simon remains the likely first-choice goalkeeper, supported by David Raya and emerging keeper Joan Garcia.
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the squad is the absence of any Real Madrid player for the first time since 1950.
Coach Luis de la Fuente opted not to include several Madrid players, with defender Dean Huijsen unavailable through injury while veteran full-back Dani Carvajal was also left out after an injury-hit season.
De la Fuente instead chose to emphasise the players selected rather than those omitted, particularly as Spain attempt to defend their status as one of Europe’s strongest national teams.
Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, another important figure during Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, is included despite fitness concerns.
Both Williams and Yamal are recovering from hamstring injuries ahead of the tournament.
“We’re very relaxed. Barring any setbacks, we’ll have everyone available from the very first match. We’re in close contact with the clubs’ medical teams,” he said.
“We’ll call on them when we deem it appropriate. I’d like to reiterate that we’ll have everyone in top form and we’ll be able to enjoy watching them in the tournament.”
Spain’s projected attacking options also include Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal and Borja Iglesias.
