Shock in Burkina Faso as record champions Étoile Filante suffer relegation

Burkina Faso’s most decorated football club, Étoile Filante de Ouagadougou, have been relegated to the second division for the first time in their history following a 3-0 aggregate defeat to USCO of Banfora in the relegation playoffs.

The shock outcome marks a dramatic turning point for a club widely regarded as one of the country’s football institutions.

Known locally as the “Queen of Stadiums,” Étoile Filante ended the regular season in 14th place, forcing them into a survival playoff against USCO, who had finished second in Group B of the second tier.

USCO took firm control of the tie in the first leg, securing a 2-0 victory at home in Banfora, a result that placed immediate pressure on the Ouagadougou giants ahead of the return fixture.

In the second leg, Étoile Filante were unable to overturn the deficit, falling 2-1 once again, sealing their relegation from the top flight.

The defeat confirmed a rare and painful decline for a club that has long been synonymous with success in Burkinabe football.

The result sends USCO into the higher division, completing a successful two-legged campaign that saw them outperform one of the country’s traditional powerhouses.

For Étoile Filante, the relegation represents a historic low point.

The club has been one of Burkina Faso’s most successful sides, with a record 13 national championship titles, a figure they share with ASFA Yennenga.

Their fall to the second tier is therefore seen as one of the most significant shocks in recent domestic football history.

Supporters and local observers have described the outcome as a symbolic end of an era for a team that has dominated Burkinabe football across different generations.

Despite their rich history and trophy cabinet, Étoile Filante were unable to find the consistency needed to survive a difficult campaign, culminating in their decisive playoff defeat.

USCO, meanwhile, will now prepare for life in the top division after completing a promotion achieved through disciplined performances across both legs of the playoff.
