FC Nantes have secured the long-term future of Malian international Sékou Doucouré after confirming a contract extension that will keep the defender at the club until 2029, with an option for a further year.
The decision forms part of the Ligue 1 side’s wider rebuilding project as they continue shaping a new squad for the coming seasons.
Doucouré, who signed his first professional contract with Nantes in August 2024, has quickly progressed within the club structure since arriving in France.
His move to Nantes came shortly after he celebrated success with Paris Saint-Germain’s U19 side, where he won the French championship.
Shortly after joining Nantes, the young defender made his first-team debut in a Ligue 1 match against LOSC Lille later in 2024, marking a rapid rise into senior football.
Since then, Doucouré has continued his development at the Jonelière training centre, where he has become a key figure for the club’s reserve team.
Coaches have also integrated him regularly into the first-team environment, allowing him to gain valuable experience at the highest domestic level in France.
Described as a powerful and physically imposing defender, Doucouré has also been praised internally for his professionalism and attitude, qualities that have helped him earn consistent involvement with the senior squad throughout the season.
On the international stage, the 21-year-old is already part of Mali’s youth system, having established himself as a Malian U23 international.
His performances at that level have reinforced his reputation as one of the country’s promising defensive prospects.
Nantes expressed satisfaction at securing his future, highlighting his importance to their long-term planning as they aim to build stability within the squad.
“FC Nantes is delighted to have him on their team until 2029, with an option for an additional year.”
The club’s decision reflects growing confidence in Doucouré’s potential to develop into a regular starter in the coming seasons.
For the player himself, the next step will be to convert his progression into a consistent place in Nantes’ first-team lineup.
While he has already featured at senior level, competition for defensive positions remains strong, and establishing himself as a regular starter is now his main objective.
Nantes, meanwhile, continue to invest in young talent as they look to balance development with performance in Ligue 1.
