Senegal boosted as Ilay Camara eases World Cup injury fears

Ilay Camara has reassured Senegal supporters over his fitness after sparking concern during Anderlecht’s 3-1 victory against Sint-Truiden just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 23-year-old right-back, who has been selected in Senegal’s squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, was forced off early during Thursday’s league match after being substituted in the 14th minute.

His exit immediately raised fears among Senegalese supporters, particularly because the defender had previously missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco through injury.

With the World Cup approaching, concerns quickly spread that Camara could once again be sidelined during a major international competition.

However, the defender moved swiftly to calm fears surrounding his condition.

“Thank you for your many messages. Everything is fine. Focus on preparing with the national team,” Camara wrote on his Instagram story on Friday.

The message was welcomed across Senegal, where supporters have been anxiously monitoring the fitness of several key players ahead of the country’s latest World Cup campaign.

Camara’s statement also aligned with comments made by Anderlecht coach Jeremy Taravel following the victory over Sint-Truiden.

“Ilay Camara’s injury does not jeopardize his World Cup. He didn’t want to take any risks.”

Although the exact nature of the injury has not been disclosed, the reassurance from both player and coach appears to have eased immediate fears that Senegal could lose another important player before the tournament begins.

The timing of the scare had intensified concern because Camara’s recent career has already been disrupted by injury setbacks.

Missing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations was regarded as a major disappointment for the young defender, who has continued establishing himself as an important option for the Lions of Teranga.

His inclusion in Senegal’s World Cup squad was viewed as part of the country’s effort to blend experienced internationals with younger players capable of bringing energy and versatility to the team.

Now, attention will shift toward ensuring he is fully fit ahead of Senegal’s preparations for the tournament.

The Lions of Teranga are among Africa’s leading hopes for the World Cup and will once again carry significant expectations after becoming one of the continent’s most consistent national teams in recent years.

Fitness concerns around key players are therefore being closely watched by supporters and coaching staff alike.

Camara’s ability to play on the right side of defence has made him a valuable member of the squad, particularly in a tournament environment where depth and flexibility can become decisive.

For Senegal, the latest update provides at least some relief during a crucial stage of preparations.
