Arsenal have been crowned Premier League champions after Manchester City F.C. failed to beat AFC Bournemouth, ending City’s title challenge with one match remaining in the season – breaking the hearts of Egypt’s Marmoush and Ghana’s Semenyo.
City’s hopes of retaining the title were effectively ended after a draw at the Vitality Stadium left Arsenal four points clear at the top of the table ahead of the final round of fixtures. The result secured Arsenal’s first league championship in 22 years after the London side had finished runners-up in each of the previous three seasons.
Manchester City entered the match knowing that only a victory would keep the title race alive. However, Bournemouth took the lead in the 39th minute through Junior Kroupi, placing increasing pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side as the game progressed.
City eventually found an equaliser through Erling Haaland in the fifth minute of stoppage time, but the goal arrived too late to alter the outcome of the title race.
The draw confirmed Arsenal as champions and brought an end to Manchester City’s pursuit of another Premier League crown.
Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush began the match on the bench before being introduced in the 76th minute in place of Jeremy Doku as Guardiola attempted to force a winning goal.
City also turned to several attacking options during the closing stages, including Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki and Savinho, in an effort to rescue their title hopes.
Despite the late pressure and Haaland’s stoppage-time strike, Bournemouth managed to hold on for the draw that ultimately decided the championship race.
Marmoush had contributed to City’s late attempt to close the gap on Arsenal in recent weeks. The Egyptian scored during the club’s 3-0 victory over Brentford F.C. before adding another goal in a second successive 3-0 win, this time against Crystal Palace F.C..
Those victories had briefly kept City within reach of Arsenal, but the dropped points against Bournemouth proved decisive.
For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the title represents a significant achievement after several seasons of narrowly missing out on the trophy. Arsenal’s consistency throughout the campaign enabled them to finally end their lengthy wait for league success.
Manchester City, meanwhile, will now finish the season in second place despite another strong campaign under Guardiola.
Their final league fixture will come at home against Aston Villa F.C. on Sunday, while Arsenal can now celebrate reclaiming the English league title for the first time in more than two decades.
The outcome at Bournemouth marked the decisive moment in the Premier League season, ending City’s challenge and confirming Arsenal as champions before the final weekend of the campaign.
