African football legends to lead AFCON 2027 draw ceremony in Cairo

The stage is set in Cairo, Egypt, where some of African football’s most celebrated names will return to the spotlight to conduct the official draw for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (PAMOJA AFCON 2027) qualifiers.

The ceremony, scheduled for 19 May at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), will bring together four iconic figures whose careers have left a lasting mark on the continent’s football history: Essam El Hadary, William Troost-Ekong, Max-Alain Gradel, and Trésor Mputu.

Together, the quartet represents different eras, nations and playing styles across African football, underscoring the tournament’s unifying spirit ahead of a highly anticipated qualification campaign.

El Hadary, Africa’s most decorated goalkeeper and a four-time AFCON winner with Egypt, is expected to be one of the headline attractions of the ceremony. His leadership and longevity at the highest level have made him a symbol of Egyptian dominance in continental football.

From Nigeria, Troost-Ekong brings a modern leadership profile, having captained the Super Eagles in recent international competitions. Known for his composure and defensive organisation, he represents the current generation of African stars who have built careers across top European leagues.

Gradel, one of Ivory Coast’s most influential attacking players over the past decade, adds flair and experience, having been part of multiple AFCON campaigns and a key figure in his nation’s attacking identity.

Completing the lineup is Trésor Mputu, widely regarded as one of the most gifted playmakers in Congolese football history. His creativity and technical brilliance made him a standout in both domestic and continental club competitions during his peak years.

CAF officials say the decision to involve former stars is part of a broader effort to celebrate African football heritage while connecting it to the future of the game. The draw will determine qualification pathways for the tournament, which runs from 19 June to 17 July 2027.

The upcoming edition of AFCON is expected to attract significant global attention, and the presence of these legends is designed to add prestige, authenticity and a sense of continuity between past and present generations.

As anticipation builds in Cairo, fans across the continent will be watching closely as familiar hands from African football history guide the next chapter of the journey to AFCON 2027.
