Angola hold Mali to goalless draw at CAF U-17 AFCON

Angola began their TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 campaign with a hard-fought goalless draw against Mali in Group C on Thursday.

Played at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, the match saw Mali dominate possession and create the majority of the chances, but Angola’s disciplined defensive organisation ensured they secured a valuable point in their opening fixture.

The standout performer for Angola was goalkeeper Gelson Dala, who produced a string of important saves to deny Mali throughout the contest.

His performance proved decisive as the Southern Africans absorbed sustained pressure for long periods while remaining compact and organised at the back.

Dala’s display earned him the TotalEnergies Man of the Match award after he repeatedly frustrated Mali’s attackers with a series of crucial interventions.

Mali, runners-up in the previous edition of the tournament, started strongly and controlled much of the early play through sharp passing and attacking movement.

The West Africans continued to press after the interval as they searched for a breakthrough, but Angola’s defensive resilience combined with poor finishing prevented them from finding the decisive goal.

Despite seeing less of the ball, Angola gradually settled into the game and occasionally threatened on the counterattack, although they created few clear scoring opportunities of their own.

The result leaves both teams with one point in what is expected to be a tightly contested Group C campaign as the race for quarter-final qualification intensifies.

The TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations also serves as a pathway to the FIFA U-17 World Cup, increasing the significance of every group-stage result in Morocco.
