Morocco submit preliminary 55-man squad for 2026 World Cup

Mohamed Ouahbi has officially submitted Morocco’s preliminary 55-man squad to FIFA ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as preparations intensify for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The extended list marks the first major stage in shaping Morocco’s final squad for the global competition and reflects a blend of experienced internationals and emerging young talents.

According to sources close to the national team, the selection was designed to maintain continuity while also rewarding several players who have impressed at club level in recent months.

Among the most notable names included is Nayef Aguerd, who continues his recovery from injury.

The defender recently began a specialised rehabilitation programme at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmoura after suffering a groin injury that ended his season prematurely with Olympique de Marseille.

Despite concerns over his fitness, Aguerd’s inclusion underlines his importance within Morocco’s defensive structure ahead of the World Cup.

Also returning to the national setup is experienced goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi.

The veteran shot-stopper recently returned to action with RS Berkane after spending four months sidelined through injury.

His recall provides additional experience and competition within Morocco’s goalkeeping department as the technical staff continue evaluating options for the final squad.

One of the more eye-catching attacking inclusions is Othmane Maamma.

The young Watford FC forward has earned growing recognition following strong performances and is now being rewarded with a place in the expanded national team group.

Another significant inclusion is Ayyoub Bouaddi, who recently committed his international future to Morocco despite reported interest from France.

His presence reflects Morocco’s continued efforts to secure highly rated dual-nationality talents as part of the federation’s long-term strategy.

Several players who featured prominently during recent Africa Cup of Nations fixtures and international friendlies against Ecuador and Paraguay also remain within the extended squad, ensuring continuity and familiarity within the group.

Under FIFA regulations, every qualified nation must submit a preliminary list containing between 35 and 55 players, including a minimum of four goalkeepers.

The lists remain confidential and represent the only pool from which final World Cup squads can be selected, except in cases involving serious injury or illness shortly before the tournament.

Morocco must now reduce the squad to a final group of between 23 and 26 players by 2 June, including three goalkeepers.

Only goalkeepers can be replaced during the tournament under FIFA’s injury replacement rules.

For Ouahbi and his coaching staff, the coming weeks will involve difficult decisions as they assess fitness levels, form and tactical balance before confirming Morocco’s final squad for the tournament.

The Atlas Lions head into the World Cup carrying growing expectations following their impressive performances in recent international competitions, with supporters hopeful the team can once again compete strongly on the global stage.
