Newcastle United are emerging as leading contenders to sign Lamine Camara, with growing interest in the midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has developed into one of the most highly regarded young players in European football since joining AS Monaco in 2024. His performances in Ligue 1, coupled with his displays for Senegal on the international stage, have attracted attention from several top clubs.
Camara is under contract with Monaco until 2029 and is valued at approximately €45 million (£39m). Despite his age, he has already earned more than 50 senior international caps, underlining his rapid progression and importance for his national team.
A number of Premier League sides are closely monitoring his situation. However, Newcastle are believed to be showing the strongest intent at this stage. Reports indicate that the club’s scouts have made multiple visits to France throughout 2026 to assess Camara, including a recent appearance in which he played the full match in Monaco’s 1–0 defeat to Lille.
Manager Eddie Howe is keen to strengthen his midfield options as Newcastle prepare for a demanding campaign. The club’s recruitment strategy is said to be focused on adding players with physical presence, technical ability, and long-term potential; qualities that Camara is widely regarded to possess.
While there has been external speculation surrounding the future of Sandro Tonali, sources within the club insist that their interest in Camara is not directly linked to any potential departure. Newcastle continue to view Tonali as an important part of their long-term plans.
Camara’s versatility is considered one of his key strengths. Capable of operating both as a defensive midfielder and in a more advanced role, he offers tactical flexibility as well as energy and composure in possession. His ability to progress the ball and contribute defensively has been highlighted as a major asset.
