Burkina Faso’s new Ligue 1 season begins with 25m FCFA title reward

Burkina Faso’s Ligue 1 begins its 2026-27 season on Friday, with the champions set to receive 25 million FCFA after the competition’s prize money was doubled.

The new campaign gets under way on 18 September, with clubs returning to action for the first round of fixtures and the title race set to begin across the country.

The increase in the champions’ reward is one of the major changes ahead of the new season.

The previous winner received 12.5 million FCFA, but that amount has now been raised to 25 million FCFA, representing a 100% increase.

The decision was taken at the General Assembly of the Burkinabe Football Federation last week.

Financial support for participating clubs has also been increased, adding another change to the competition as the 2026-27 campaign gets under way.

Eight matches are scheduled for the opening weekend, with fixtures spread across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

All eight games are scheduled to begin at 15:30 local time.

The opening fixture will see AS SONABEL face Majestic SC on Friday at the CNT/FBF.

Five matches are then scheduled for Saturday.

ASFA-Y will play USCO, while AS Maaya will host USFA. Focus Sport will meet AS Douanes and Sporting FC will face CFFEB.

The final match of Saturday’s programme will complete another busy day of action as the teams begin their campaigns.

Sunday will bring another three fixtures.

Salitas FC will take on ASFB, RCK will face Vitesse FC, while Rahimo FC will host Real du Faso at the Stade Wobi in Bobo-Dioulasso.

The opening weekend gives the clubs an immediate opportunity to begin their pursuit of the championship and other targets for the season.

While the title will be the main prize, teams will also be competing for places of honour and to avoid relegation as the campaign develops.

The increase in prize money adds a financial dimension to the competition alongside the sporting battle.

The champion will now receive twice the previous amount, with the 25 million FCFA prize representing a significant increase compared with last season.

The rise follows the decision by the Burkinabe Football Federation to increase both championship prize money and subsidies for clubs.
