2027 AFCON: Seychelles hold Lesotho in qualifier stalemate

Seychelles national football team and Lesotho national football team played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their 2027 AFCON qualifiers preliminary-round clash at Toyota Stadium on Thursday.

The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the decisive second leg, scheduled to take place in three days.

Both sides will now look to improve their attacking efficiency as they aim to secure progression to the next round.

Lesotho came into the encounter with slightly more experience at this stage, having featured in the previous qualifying campaign where they reached the group stage.

Seychelles, on the other hand, were returning after missing out on the last edition’s qualifiers, making this fixture a significant opportunity to reassert themselves on the continental stage.

The opening minutes reflected the high stakes, with both teams adopting a cautious approach. Lesotho saw more of the ball early on, attempting to dictate play through midfield and stretch the Seychelles defensive shape.

However, Seychelles remained disciplined and compact, limiting space in key areas and preventing any clear chances from developing.

As the first half progressed, Seychelles began to settle into the game and showed more confidence going forward. Their attacks were largely built on quick transitions, looking to catch Lesotho off guard.

Despite some promising moves, the final ball often lacked the necessary precision to trouble the opposition goalkeeper.

Lesotho continued to probe, particularly down the flanks, but their deliveries into the box failed to find a decisive touch. Both defenses held firm, and goal-scoring opportunities remained scarce as the first half ended without a breakthrough.

After the break, the tempo increased slightly as both teams sought to gain an advantage before the return leg.

Lesotho pushed higher up the pitch and attempted to apply more pressure, while Seychelles maintained their structured defensive approach and looked for openings on the counterattack.

Substitutions were introduced in the second half in an effort to add energy and creativity in the final third. While these changes brought brief moments of attacking promise, neither side managed to create a clear-cut chance. The goalkeepers were largely untested, highlighting the defensive nature of the contest.

In the closing stages, both teams appeared wary of conceding a late goal that could prove costly. The cautious mindset ensured the match ended in a stalemate, keeping the tie wide open.

With everything still to play for, the second leg promises a more decisive encounter. Both Seychelles and Lesotho will need to show greater attacking intent if they are to keep their 2027 AFCON qualification hopes alive.
