Morocco moved to the brink of the World Cup knockout stages after Ismael Saibari’s record-breaking early goal secured a 1-0 victory over Scotland in a tense Group C encounter at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The Atlas Lions needed just 71 seconds to find the breakthrough, with Saibari scoring the fastest goal of the 2026 World Cup so far.
The victory lifted Morocco to four points from two matches and strengthened their hopes of advancing to the last 32 as they continue their quest to replicate, or even surpass, their historic run to the semi-finals in Qatar four years ago.
For African football, the result was another significant statement on the global stage. After holding Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their opening match, Morocco followed up with a disciplined and efficient performance against Scotland to put themselves in a strong position in Group C.
The decisive moment arrived almost immediately after kick-off.
Real Madrid playmaker Brahim Diaz provided the assist, lifting a ball over the Scottish defence.
Grant Hanley inadvertently played Saibari onside, allowing the Moroccan forward to race through, control the pass and fire a powerful finish high beyond goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
It was a strike that not only settled the contest but also underlined the growing reputation of the 25-year-old attacker, who had already scored in Morocco’s draw against Brazil.
Saibari’s latest contribution came amid reports linking him with a major transfer from PSV Eindhoven to Bayern Munich, and his composed finish demonstrated the quality that has attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Morocco nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Yassine El Khannouss met a corner delivered by Achraf Hakimi, but Gunn reacted well to produce an important save.
From that point, the Atlas Lions appeared content to manage the game, relying on the defensive organisation and tactical discipline that have become trademarks of the team in recent years.
Scotland entered the match buoyed by a narrow victory over Haiti in their opening fixture, a result that had ended a long wait for a World Cup win.
Another victory would have guaranteed their progress to the next stage, but Steve Clarke’s side struggled to create clear opportunities against a well-drilled Moroccan defence.
The Scottish coach opted to strengthen his backline by introducing Kieran Tierney and switching to a back five, with striker Lawrence Shankland dropping out of the starting lineup. However, those plans were disrupted almost immediately by Saibari’s early strike.
Despite enjoying periods of possession, Scotland found it difficult to test Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Ryan Christie came close midway through the second half when he fired over after being set up by Scott McTominay.
McTominay himself later struck the side netting as Scotland pushed for an equaliser, but Morocco remained composed under pressure and saw out the contest.
A crowd of 64,146 spectators watched the match in Massachusetts, where Morocco’s supporters celebrated another memorable World Cup performance.
The victory leaves the Atlas Lions second in Group C and firmly in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.
They will face Haiti in Atlanta on Wednesday knowing that another positive result could secure their passage to the last 32.
Scotland, meanwhile, must now turn their attention to a difficult final group match against Brazil in Miami, with their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
